NHS Values

Service
  • Candidates for the HSMSE chapter of NHS must demonstrate commitment to service, both to the school and to the community. 
  • Event coordinators must attest to service hours. 
Leadership
  • Candidates for the HSMSE chapter of NHS must demonstrate leadership in the classroom, at school events, and in extracurricular activities.
  • Leadership will be verified in part through teachers' and club advisors' recommendations. The HSMSE chapter requires two recommendations from teachers.   
Character
  • Candidates for the HSMSE chapter of NHS must demonstrate exemplary character and academic integrity. 
  • Character is verified through teachers' and club advisors' recommendations and through a review of the candidate's disciplinary history.
Scholarship
  • Candidates for the HSMSE chapter of NHS should have a cumulative grade point average of 88 or above. However, exceptions to this minimum GPA can and will be made in cases where candidates' grades have shown a significant upward trajectory and candidates have demonstrated serious commitment to academic inquiry and academic integrity.
  • In addition to a candidate's official transcript, scholarship will be verified through faculty recommendations and through a review of the candidate's disciplinary history.

Membership Requirements

The HSMSE chapter of NHS accepts applications from sophomores and juniors during the spring term. Seniors may also apply under special circumstances.

Your application must include...
  • your GPA
  • a description of the service* you have completed to date. Sophomores should have at least 40 service hours; juniors should have at least 60 service hours.
  • 2 short (<150 words) responses to prompts 
  • 2 teacher recommendations

*We define service as work done to help others without pay. This means that you freely volunteered your time to make a positive difference in your community. We do not accept hours from programs like the EPIC Internship that are primarily designed for personal enrichment.

The application is due on Friday, April 19 at 11:59 PM. No exceptions can be made to this deadline.

Note that in order to remain members in good standing, NHS members are expected to volunteer for peer tutoring and attend all NHS meetings.
